Fall Engagement Session in Sedona | J + K

It’s hard to believe that last October, the three of us were meeting up for a Fall engagement session in Sedona, and now it’s wedding week! Every time I do engagement sessions I swear the time just flies by. This weekend I’ll be enjoying some Arizona weather again as I fly out to celebrate and document Jordyn and Kelan’s wedding day! This wedding is a little special because one of my previous grooms will be officiating their day! But let’s talk a little more about these two cuties!

How we met:

Kelan was transferring from his hometown of Wheaton, Illinois to Arizona State University to acquire his degree in Communication in 2014. I was beginning as a freshman at ASU as a Business Management major. Before moving out here, Kelan and I were apart of an online community offered to new students called Devil2Devil. This was a platform for incoming freshman and transfers alike to get to know each other before coming to campus. I received a friend request one day and soon we became pen pals. Once Kelan moved to Tempe, we officially met and became best friends. We became adventure buddies, doing things such as hiking, off roading, and kayaking Tempe Town Lake. We made a lot of amazing memories and slowly fell in love, though timing was never right. We were there for each other for heart breaks and let downs, never realizing how the other felt. It wasn’t until we had spent some time apart and did a little growing that we realized we wanted to be in  each others’ lives again. Being best friends again was like riding a bike and it was easy to fall right back in to the same rhythm. It only took about three and a half years but we were finally ready to give this a chance and it was easily the best decision I’ve ever made.

How he asked:

The “wow factor” was easy. I was invited to a family vacation to Hawaii by Jordyn‘s dad and I knew this would be the perfect place to ask her to marry me. The execution would be a little tougher than anticipated. I knew Jordyn did not want to be asked in front of a crowd but given that Kauai is a popular vacation destination, that did not make it easy. I had initially spoken to her dad about a possible location where a waterfall would be. Him and his wife had found it before on a previous trip and I thought it would be a perfect place to ask her. It turns out that this idea would have to be scrapped as this location has no access legally. I then knew I would have to play it by ear. I carried the ring with me at all times, just in case the right time would happen. We had taken a trip up a mountain to Waimea Canyon and I had good vibes that this would be the perfect place to ask her. We eventually came across an outlook point that I thought would be perfect since the view was beautiful and there was no crowd in sight. Of course, I would find myself completely alone as she had decided to go off trail with her sister and step-mom. I quickly followed her and would find her at this secluded clearing overlooking this gorgeous green canyon with a waterfall and the ocean in the distance. I knew this was the moment I was waiting for. Before she could walk off to explore further, I stopped her and told her exactly what she meant to me. I was grateful to have her in my life and that I never wanted to be without her. That is when I got down on one knee, pulled the ring out of my back pack, and asked her to marry me. When she said yes, she completed my world.

What I like about him:

He’s alright. Just kidding! Kelan is my best friend. There has never been anyone that I’ve felt so comfortable to be with. I truly feel like I can be myself. He is one of the kindest people I know and tries to see the best in everyone he meets. He makes me laugh so much that I should have a six-pack. His weirdness matches mine perfectly and together we just have so much fun. He has a sense of adventure that is exciting and inspiring. He is up for anything and that gives me the courage to go past my comfort zone and experience life.
He pushes me to be a better person. To be more patient. To communicate better. To be a better partner. I truly believe that I have found my soulmate.

What I like about her:

No one mentioned a “liking her” part. Kidding! Jordyn is my best friend and I couldn’t be more grateful to have her in my life. I knew quickly on that I wanted to be with her as her sense of adventure and smarts attracted me. I loved all the experiences we shared when it was just us. Those situations allowed us to show our true colors and made me love her even more. Through it all I knew I always wanted more. Survivor put it best when they said “Every highway is leading me back to you”. That line could not have rang any truer as I knew she was my other half. She was always there to support me, push me and make me a better person. Forever just doesn’t seem long enough as our relationship becomes stronger. Like I always tell her: I’ll find her in the next life, and the one after that, and the one after that. She can’t get rid of me that easily.
